Youth Services Librarian

The Barrington Area Library seeks an organized, collaborative, and customer-focused Librarian to complete our Youth Services team. The Youth Services Librarian provides reference and reader’s advisory to customers; initiates, plans, and presents a wide range of diverse and innovative programs in support of department goals; selects and maintains collection materials; and coordinates special services, as assigned.

About the Department:
The Youth Services department is responsible for selecting and recommending materials for children from birth-eighth grade and their caregivers, as well as shaping services, experiences, and spaces that inspire curiosity and create young readers. The Youth Services space is a lively, interactive environment – we even have a slide! – that encourages discovery and hands-on learning through play.

  • You are comfortable relating to kids of all ages and their caregivers.
  • You’re passionate about inspiring young readers and learners, and have ideas for how to expand library access and services to students.
  • You are curious about our profession and community, and always willing to learn something new.
  • You feel energized by collaborating with others to create new projects.
  • You are organized and can juggle multiple responsibilities.

Requirements and Skills:
This position requires completion of an ALA-accredited MLS degree. The successful candidate will have: experience delivering library programs to children; knowledge of children’s books; and a demonstrated history of strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, digital literacy, and customer service skills.

Hours, Salary, and Benefits:
This full-time exempt position averages 37.5 hours per week, including day, evening, and weekend shifts. Flexibility is required based on the needs of the department.
The starting salary is $55,076.11. Benefits include: participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) plan; paid time off for vacation, sick days, and holidays; medical, dental, and life insurance plans are available, including generous cost-sharing of premiums by the Library for dependents for health care.
