Part-Time Youth Services Assistant Librarian

ABOUT US: The Barrington Area Library is a busy, friendly place that supports lifelong, active learning, and an appreciation for creativity and innovation. Customers of all ages and interests visit our Library, expecting to find excellent and informed service, and spaces designed for private work and group collaboration. The Youth Services department is a lively, interactive environment (we even have a slide!) which encourages discovery and hands-on learning through play. The Youth Services Assistant Librarian plays a key role in fostering a love of reading, learning, and creativity while working collaboratively to provide engaging programming and services for children and their caregivers.

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Serve customers at in-person and virtual service points through reference, reader’s advisory, and basic technology assistance to children from birth-eighth grade and their caregivers.
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the department through various clerical tasks.
  • Assist with maintaining the children’s and teens' circulating collections.
  • Support Youth Services programming staff in preparing and presenting programs for children and their caregivers, including story times, craft programs, technology classes, and other assigned activities.
  • Actively promote Library services, materials, and programs to customers.
  • Demonstrate good stewardship of physical and virtual spaces by preparing and merchandising department displays, continually maintaining interactive areas, and producing and updating content for the Library’s web presence, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • You enjoy interacting with and assisting kids of all ages (and their caregivers) and teens!
  • At least 1 year of experience working with children in a service setting preferred.
  • You possess strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and familiarity with other current technology.
  • Flexibility to be able to work rotating and various work shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Onsite and occasional travel within the local community.

LOCATION: 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington, IL

SCHEDULING: This is a year-round, part-time, non-exempt (hourly) position. Weekly schedule is 20 - 24 hours per week, which includes day, evening, and rotating weekend and holiday shifts.

PAY & BENEFITS: The starting pay range is $21.00 - $22.00 per hour (DOQ). Skills, experience, and internal equity will determine offer made. This position is eligible for the following benefits:

Part-Time Adult Services Assistant Librarian

The Adult Services Assistant Librarian plays a key part in enhancing customer experiences by providing timely and knowledgeable assistance, while fostering a welcoming environment for all Library visitors.

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Provide service at in-person and virtual service points for reference, reader’s advisory, and basic technology assistance for adult and young adult customers.
  • Provide basic support to customers for downloadable/streaming services.
  • Actively promote Library services, materials, and programs to customers.
  • Respond to or refer customer questions and concerns.
  • Assist in preparation and delivery of programs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends in popular culture related to Library services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in delivering exceptional customer service to diverse individuals and groups is a plus.
  • Strong collaboration and problem-solving abilities in both team settings and customer interactions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Onsite and occasional travel within the local community.

LOCATION: 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington, IL

SCHEDULING: This is a year-round, part-time, non-exempt (hourly) position. Weekly hours average 20-24 hours/week. Scheduling generally consist of Monday-Friday shifts between 8:30 AM-5 PM, plus one evening per week, one Friday evening per month, and one weekend per month.

Customers of all ages and interests visit our Library, expecting to find excellent and informed service, and spaces designed for private work and group collaboration.

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Perform tasks such as check-in, inspection, alphabetizing, shelving, and straightening of materials to ensure ready access of the collection on library shelves.
  • Maintain the appearance of public areas of library by collecting and re-shelving materials (at various heights) while using a push cart.
  • Ensure that the collection is correctly shelved by the Dewey Decimal System, by inspecting labels.
  • Provide directional service to customers as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age and able to pass shelving test.
  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks on time.
  • Strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with MS Office and basic data entry skills on electronic device.
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and reliable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Standard office environment
  • Push heavy carts daily

LOCATION: 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington, IL

SCHEDULING: This is a part-time, hourly position. Scheduling is 16 hours per week from 1 - 5 PM on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

PAY & BENEFITS: The starting pay range is $15.50 - $15.77 per hour. This position is eligible for paid vacation, paid sick time, and bereavement pay.
