In past years, we've had some pretty amazing guests from our area speak on a variety of topics during our annual TEDxBarringtonAreaLibrary events. This year is sure to be no exception! Join us November 12, 2020 at 6 PM for a virtual TEDx event. Adult Services Librarian Hayley Schommer has spent most of the year planning what has been the most unique TEDx event we've held so far. The planning process is more complicated than you might think--here's a look behind the curtain.
After obtaining the license to produce a TED event and months before the live presentations, a small committee goes to work to find the right presenters. The perspective speakers nominated by the committee are whittled down to two or three. With the speakers chosen, the hard work isn't over! From there, Hayley and her video team go to work on how to best record the event for people to enjoy online through the TEDx YouTube channel. Between then and the actual event, the speakers are busy at work on their talks, while we at the library are busy working on the program behind the scenes, making sure everyone is prepared for their role in TEDx. The night of TEDx is equal parts exciting and nerve-racking for all involved, but it always ends up being a fun-filled night celebrating our community. After the event, the work falls to the video editor to take all the footage shot that night and edit it into a presentation to TED's standards. With the videos submitted, the work starts all over again as we begin working towards our next TEDx event.
For 2020, we had to do things a little differently, bringing TEDxBarringtonAreaLibray directly to you via Zoom. Joining the ranks of our 16 past TEDx speakers are Janet Anderson, Barrington High School Teacher Librarian, and Melissa Buckley, JourneyCare Foundation Trustee, former BStrong Together founding president & long-time community volunteer. Having already recorded and edited their talks, I can safely say that both are sure to energize and inspire our community to be better and do better as we move into 2021. After we hear their talks, there will be a short Q&A session, so you can get to know them even more, hosted by Librarian Hayley.
