Alvin Carl Shermer was born March 28, 1912 in Chicago to Frederick and Helen Skibbe Shermer.
Shermer graduated from Palatine High School in 1929, and began his work in the stationery and printing business.
On June 12, 1937, he married Evelyn Mae Hans in Barrington; they raised two children.
Shermer was 31 years old when he was called to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII on February 7, 1944. His second child was born while Shermer was stationed in Germany, and he was honorably discharged as a Corporal on November 9, 1945.
In 1951, he opened his own office supply and stationery retail business, Business Stationers of Chicago, and ran it until his 1979 retirement.
Shermer was a member of American Legion Post #158 and VFW Post #7706, and acted as liaison for North Chicago Veteran’s Hospital. He was also a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Lounsbury Lodge, Medinah Temple, and a volunteer for the Barrington Fire Department.
CPL Alvin Schermer died February 19, 1995 in Barrington and is buried with his wife in Evergreen Cemetery.
