Robert John Zehr was born October 1, 1926 in Elgin, to Ezra and Mathilda Berna Zehr.
His service during World War II was in the U.S. Army from February 5, 1945 until his honorable discharge as a Technician Fifth Grade on December 11, 1946. TEC5 was a specialized enlisted rank used by the Army during World War II, created to recognize soldiers with vital technical skills—such as mechanics, medics, and radio operators—who did not serve as combat leaders.
Zehr married Lillian Schroeder before 1948; they had five children. He married Lorraine Spurney Berg in the autumn of 1973.
Professionally, Zehr worked for Elgin Watch Company as an inspector and machinist, then for Shakeproof Industries (Illinois Tool Works) as a tool and die maker.
TEC5 Robert Zehr died January 20, 1988 in Barrington, and is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
