LT John E. Schippel

John Edward Schippel was born May 25, 1934 in Detroit to Alvin and Lorie Vance Schippel.
He graduated from the University of Michigan, B.B.A. in 1956, then earned an M.B.A. and LL.B. from UofM in 1959. He was affiliated with Zeta Phi and Phi Delta Phi fraternities there.
Schippel served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia from November, 1960 to November, 1963.
On December 23, 1960, he married Mary Jo Liken in Sebewaing, Michigan; they raised twins in Livonia and Farmington Hills, Michigan.
After his military service, Schippel served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Charles C. Simons, then joined Chrysler Corporation in the real estate department. In the late 1970’s Schippel transitioned to ABKO Properties, which was formed specifically to purchase and liquidate underperforming Chrysler Realty Corporation assets.
After ABKO properties was dissolved, Schippel joined Homart Development, a commercial real estate developer of shopping malls and subsidiary of Sears, and the family relocated to Lake Barrington. He retired as First Vice President, Law, Secretary, and General Counsel at Homart.
Schippel served on the Board of Directors International Association of Corporate Real Estate Executives. He enjoyed distance running, and completed six CRIM 10-mile races 1994-1998.
LT John Schippel died December 8, 2025, and is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
