August Lewis “Gus” Altenburg was born May 19 1909 in Lake Zurich, to August and Therese Berg Altenburg.
On November 30, 1940, he married Helen Pinnow in Barrington; they raised three children.
Altenburg was a Veteran of WWII, joining the U.S. Army September 4, 1943, and serving until March 9, 1946.
After the war, Altenburg worked construction, and performed foundry work as a core maker.
He was a member of Barrington American Legion Post #158.
Veteran Gus Altenburg died May 6, 1977 in Elgin, and is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
