Caleb Harlan Canby III was born in Chicago, on March 10, 1922, to Caleb H. Canby, Jr. and Ruth Cudney Canby.

He served in the Pacific Theatre with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, from July, 1943 until his honorable discharge as a Corporal in January, 1946.

Canby graduated from Yale University in 1946 with a B.A. in History, and received his J. D. from Loyola in 1948.

On September 3, 1947, Canby married Miriam Louise Pearsall in Dundee; they had three children. He married, secondly, Bonnie Spring Kunsky.

Canby was a lawyer by profession, and a 55-year member of the Illinois State Bar Association. He served as the attorney for the Village of Barrington Hills, Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District, and First Federal Savings and Loan of Barrington.

Canby was a civic leader in the Barrington community. He was a Justice of the Peace, a special prosecutor for the Village of Barrington, and a volunteer firefighter for the Barrington Fire Department for 36 years. He was a charter member of the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce, a Past Commander of Barrington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7706, and a member of Barrington American Legion Post #158.

Canby was also a Masonic leader. He was a Past Master of Lounsbury Lodge #751 in Barrington, a member of the Northern Illinois White Shrine Association and Medinah Shrine A.N.O.M.S.

CPL Caleb H. Canby III passed away at his home December 31, 2010, and is buried with family members in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
