Wilbur James Berghorn was born on July 31, 1893 in Lake Zurich to Fred and Mary Thies Berghorn.

Berghorn served in World War I as a Private in Company C, 353rd Infantry until his honorable discharge on June 1, 1919. The regiment saw action in both the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives with its parent division and was subsequently called upon to participate in the occupation of Germany.

On November 27, 1919, he married Ruth Peterson in Chicago; they raised three children.

Berghorn was a lifelong resident of Lake Zurich where he owned a dairy farm. He belonged to the American Legion and the Salem United Methodist Church.

PVT Wilbur Berghorn died July 13, 1971 in McHenry County, and is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
