Roy Erastus Willmering was born January 1, 1887 in Columbus Junction, Iowa to Herman and Mollie Morrison Willmering.
On September 24, 1907, he married Ora Scranton in Pike County, Illinois; they had two children.
Willmering served in World War I, spending eight months in France as a Master Electrician in the 485th Aero Construction Squadron, which built the entire AEF airbase at Chatenay-sur-Seine, France in 1918.
Myrlie Beagle became his second wife about 1924, and they located in Barrington, where Willmering became an embalmer and funeral home owner-operator until his retirement in 1948.
Willmering’s legacy was the civic service he rendered as a Barrington resident. As a service officer for American Legion Post 158, he assisted Veterans and their families in areas of hospitalization, disability claims, and pension applications. He designed and engineered to completion the Veterans’ burial section in Evergreen Cemetery, saw that it was landscaped with a monument and flagpole. He compiled and maintained an accurate record of all the Veterans of all the wars. For many years, Willmering headed the association that arranged for the Memorial Day parade, and led other local organizations in the service and entertainment of hospitalized Veterans. As Scoutmaster of Barrington Boy Scout Troop 21 from 1935-1946, Willmering and his scouts gained national recognition for selling $1.85M of stamps and war bonds in a four-year campaign. He was a member of the Lounsbury Lodge No. 751, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, and participated in the Barrington Lions Club.
M.E Roy Willmering died May 24, 1966 in his Barrington home, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery with his wife.
