Samuel Pierson Willits was born July 29, 1924 in Omer, Michigan, to Walter and Ethel Smith Willits.

Willits enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 22, 1943 in Detroit and served in World War II until February, 1947, when he was discharged as Lieutenant Junior Grade. 

He was a 1944 graduate of University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Math. He worked for the University in Electrical Engineering Research through 1950.

On August 25, 1945, he married Florence Elaine Eckberg in Grand Rapids, Michigan; they raised two children.

Willits was a creative engineer and inventor, with over 100 patents. He was the founder and CEO of Spartanics, Ltd. For more than 40 years. 

LT Sam Willits died at his winter home in Marco Island, Florida, April 5, 2012. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington, where he lived for many years.
