Russell Lee Turner was born on September 30, 1923 in LaFarge, Wisconsin to Edward and Fernie Slagle Turner.

 

Turner served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged on June 27, 1946 as a Motor Machinist’s Mate, Third Class.


On 28 Aug 1948, he married Mary Frances Ayers in Elgin; they raised three children in Barrington.

 

Turner worked as an over-the-road truck driver and was hired at Dairy Transport in 1955. Thirteen years later, he purchased the firm and was co-owner for the next five years. After the sale of the company, he worked for Boncosky Transportation until he retired in 1988. 


Turner was also involved in the Barrington community as a member of Barrington VFW Post #7706. He served on the Barrington Volunteer Fire Department for 34 years, retiring in 1988 as Captain and Chief Engineer. 


Shortly after his retirement, Turner began working at Evergreen Cemetery, where he became Superintendent of daily operations. He was joined there in 1991, by his wife who took care of the cemetery’s sales and historical records until her death in 2000.


MM3 Russ Turner passed away peacefully on June 23, 2006 in Barrington, and is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
