PVT Kermit D. Smiddy

Kermit D. Smiddy was born July 27, 1937 in Harlan County, Kentucky, to Kermit M. and Myrtle Davis Smiddy.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a Private at the NIKE missile base in Barrington from 1955 to 1957. More than 300 NIKE Missile Bases were constructed in the U.S. between 1953 and 1974, operating under the direction of the Army Air Defense Command. Missile Base C-84, east of Quentin Road, between Lake Cook and Long Grove Roads, was armed with NIKE Ajax Missiles and was one of 23 NIKE installations in the Chicago-Gary Defense Area.

Smiddy married Donna R. Johnson on February 11, 1959; they had two children.

Smiddy owned several businesses in town, worked at Barrington High School as head grounds keeper, and served several years as an elected official for Cuba Township as Highway Commissioner.

Private Kermit Smiddy passed away peacefully March 6, 2024 in Barrington. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery with his wife.
