Lawrence Walter Haines, Jr. was born April 4, 1923 in Riverside, New Jersey, to Lawrence and Florence Gorman Haines.
Haines spent his formative years in Camden, NJ. It was there he worked as a child during the Great Depression for Western Union as a telegraph messenger, while also selling newspapers. Prior to his enlistment, he worked as a fireman for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.
On February 27, 1943, Haines enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the European and Pacific theaters of World War II. He was honorably discharged as an Electrician’s Mate Third Class in March, 1946.
Haines met his wife, Violet LaPointe, at a shipmate's wedding; they married in 1946 in Barrington, IL, where they settled and raised their three children.
Throughout his life, Haines was known for his humor, work ethic, and craftsmanship. He worked for the Barrington Woodworking Company and the Jewel Tea Company, where he developed and showcased his skills as a carpenter and cabinetmaker. He took great pride in his work, leaving behind a legacy of fine craftsmanship that will be cherished for generations to come. His hobbies included bowling, carving, and cheering on his beloved New York Yankees.
Electrician’s Mate Lawrence Haines Jr. passed away on May 6, 2024, at the age of 101. He is buried with his wife at Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
