Willis Robert “Bill” Altenburg was born in Elgin on March 3, 1947, to Willis and Ruth Altenburg.
He graduated from Barrington High School in 1966, and entered the service his country in October, 1966 during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from U.S. Naval active duty in July, 1970 as a Storekeeper Third Class. Storekeepers are the Navy's supply clerks, responsible for ensuring that the necessary supplies are available, including clothing, machine parts, food, and forms.
Altenburg married Bonnie Jean Heineman in 1971; they raised two children.
He was an outdoorsman and photographer of beauty he saw in nature.
As a lifelong resident of Barrington, Altenburg knew many details about the development of the Barrington area, recalling often the areas he and his father fished and hunted. He also loved to recount the trips he and his wife made throughout the U.S. and Europe.
SK3 Bill Altenburg passed away on October 6, 2024, and is buried with family members in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
