Robert August Thoms was born July 11, 1890 in Wauconda, to Carl and Anna Heitman Thoms.
Thoms grew up in Lake County before serving in World War I. He was a U.S. Army Private in Battery A of the 331st Field Artillery in France from September 1918 to February 1919.
He married widow Flora Mae (Wood) Payne on June 29, 1923, and became stepfather to her three children.
By profession, Thoms was a construction worker and cement finisher. He and his family lived in Barrington the last 25 years of his life.
Private Robert Thoms died May 26, 1968 at his Barrington home. He is buried with his wife in Evergreen Cemetery.
