WWII

Ernest Bernard Cooper was born on June 20, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Ernest and Iola Matherly Cooper.

The family moved to Illinois before 1930, where his mother remarried by 1940 when Cooper was a student in Barrington.

Cooper enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 15, 1943 and served as a Technician fifth grade (TEC5) in the 4833rd Service Command Unit until his honorable discharge November 17, 1947. The rank was created to recognize enlisted non-combat soldiers with special technical skills, and Service Commands were garrisoned stateside to process draftees, issue uniforms, operate stateside hospitals, and provide MPs for POW and internment camps.

After his service in World War II, Cooper made his home with his mother and stepfather in Barrington. His profession is undetermined.

TEC5 Bernard Cooper died December 10, 1961 at Hines VA Hospital, after a three-year illness. He is buried in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery with his family.
