Robert Erving Potter, Sr. was born August 4, 1900 in Somerville, Massachusetts, to George A. and Eleanor Rea Potter.

He married Ethyl K. Koefoed in Chicago on September 14, 1923; they raised three sons.

Potter came to Chicago in 1921 and worked for United States Daily, which became U.S. News and World Report. He became active in Chicago radio in late 1920’s and 1930’s as automotive editor and advertising manager of the Chicago Journal of Commerce. Potter was also involved in the management of radio station WHIP, which began operation in 1936.

In 1942, he moved his family to Barrington and started his own advertising business, which he ran until he retired in 1973.

Potter was one of the founding members of the Chicago Press Club and a Midwest radio pioneer.

Private Robert Potter, Sr. died June 30, 1979, and is buried with his family in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
