Peter Smith was born about 1833 in Germany.
Smith enlisted November 4, 1861 in Detroit, and mustered with the Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Company C, 15th Regiment on December 24, 1861. He went missing on October 3, 1862 in the Siege of Corinth, (Mississippi), and was held prisoner until February 6, 1863. Corporal Smith mustered out August 13, 1865.
Smith lived in Wauconda, Illinois, by 1870. He was occupied there as a tailor and married to Ellen, possibly Ellen Black, as they are residing with Adolph Black. In 1880, he and Ellen lived with their four sons in Volo in Lake County.
Corporal Peter Smith died 11 July 1902, and is buried in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
