Walter Irving Kersten was born March 21, 1922 in Dundee to Charles (Karl) and Lydia Koch Kersten.
In 1940, he married Genevieve McWilliams in Cook County; they had three children.
Kersten was inducted into the U.S. Army on January 15, 1942, and served in World War II as a Technical Specialist in an anti-aircraft machine gun battery. He was wounded June, 1943 in North Africa. After recovery in England and the U.S., TEC4 Kersten served in the 11th Airborne Parachute Maintenance Company in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on November 27, 1945.
After the war, Kersten became a layout man for Jenson Construction.
Technical Specialist 4th Class Walter Kersten died in Waukegan on June 15, 1956; he is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
