Arthur Edmund Cruttenden was born April 6, 1919 in Chicago, to Arthur T. and Lillian Brown Cruttenden.

He graduated from New Trier High School in 1937, and attended one year of college before pursuing a career in sales and advertising.

Cruttenden married Nancy Jane Brown on September 6, 1941 in Wilmette; they raised four children.

He entered military service on October 28, 1942, and served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force 1st Combat Cargo Squadron. As a pilot on the China-Burma-India run in the Pacific Theatre, Cruttenden was a decorated officer, having received the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters and the  Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster. He was honorably released from active duty on April 14, 1944, but rejoined as a USAF Reservist for an additional 8 years.

After establishing himself as an Account Executive with Tatham-Laird, the family moved to Barrington in 1948, and Cruttenden joined the Barrington Hills Country Club.

First Lieutenant Arthur Cruttenden died August 27, 1960, in his Barrington home. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery with his wife.
