Donald Curtis Brasel was born in Grayslake on August 21, 1928 to Carl R. and Ruth Hoffman Brasel.
Brasel entered the U.S. Army on June 28, 1946, and served until his honorable discharge on January 6, 1948. He attended Bradley University for the next three years.
He and his first wife, Nancy, had three children. Brasel married Mary Jane Madsen Malecki on December 22, 1958.
On January 10, 1951, he re-enlisted, this time in the U.S. Air Force with the 21st Weather Squadron, where meteorologists and weather technicians ensure continuous monitoring of terrestrial and space weather activity to provide environmental intelligence in support of all branches of the service. Brasel he was posted in Korea and Africa, then was the chief weather observer at O’Hare airport for five years.
He had completed 20 months of a three-year assignment in Spain when he was killed in a car accident on the southeast coast.
Tech Sergeant’s military service overlapped WWII and Korean Wars.
Tech Sergeant Donald Brasel died on January 28, 1961. He is buried in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery with his parents.
