1831 – 1899
Company I, 52nd Illinois Infantry
CW
Henry Galusha Willmarth was born November 10, 1831, in Adams, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, to Homer and Mary Adeline Wells Willmarth.
The family immigrated to a farm at Barrington Center in 1838, becoming one of the area’s earliest settlers.
Willmarth married Elizabeth Jencks in 1853 in Barrington. They had six children, two of whom survived to adulthood.
Willmarth was a farmer when he enlisted in the Union Army as a Second Lieutenant on September 11, 1861. He served in Company I, 52nd Illinois Infantry, where he was promoted to a First Lieutenant. He resigned on September 2, 1862, due to declining health after the Company fought in the Battle of Shiloh and Siege of Corinth.
After his war service, he opened a general store in Barrington known as Willmarth & Powers with another Civil War Veteran from Company I, Leroy Powers. The business was a prosperous partnership for 14 years, when Willmarth retired.
First Lieutenant Henry Willmarth died April 26, 1899 at his home in Barrington. He is buried with his family in Evergreen Cemetery.
