John Frederick Popp, Jr. was born March 10, 1933, in Barrington, to John F. and Florence Wollenberg Popp.
Popp was a star athlete in football, basketball, and track at Barrington High School, where he graduated in 1951.
He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on November 27, 1951, and assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. Corporal Popp was killed in action by enemy fire in the Korean Battle of Bunker Hill. According to the Korean War Veterans Honor Roll, Corporal Popp was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
Corporal John F. Popp, Jr. died on August 16, 1952. His final resting place is beside his parents in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
