Alfred Samuel Henderson was born at Algonquin, McHenry County, on February 27, 1842, the son of Eli and Cornelia Henderson.
Henderson enlisted, on September 15, 1861, in Company K, 8th Wisconsin Infantry. He worked his way up to Quartermaster Sergeant, then Second Lieutenant. He held the rank of First Lieutenant in Company H, 3rd U. S. Cavalry, when he was mustered out of service on January 20, 1866, having taken part in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Hawley's Springs, Wilson Creek, Vicksburg, and others.
Henderson settled at Barrington, and established a hardware business that he ran both independently and with various partners from 1866 until 1891. He took a prominent part in the affairs of the community, and for nine years he served on the Village Board of Trustees, serving as President for six of those years.
Henderson’s first wife was Lottie M. Castle. He married widow Lucinda Fosket Boyce of Palatine on January 12, 1871; two children were born to them.
Lieutenant Alfred Henderson died in Barrington on October 28, 1928; he is buried with his family in Evergreen Cemetery.
