Thomas Gray was born in 1843 in Ulster County, New York, to Lewis and Keziah Gray.

Gray relocated to Illinois before 1860. He was a farmer in Riley Township, McHenry County when he enlisted in May, 1861 for military service in Company D, 15th Illinois Infantry. He extended his three-year commitment in December, 1863, with Company C, 15th Illinois Infantry, and mustered out on September 16, 1865, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, as a Private.

He was married to Catherine Julia Barth in McHenry County on May 22, 1867; they had four children.

The couple moved to Worth, Boone County, Iowa, where he worked in a saw mill, and all their children were born.

Private Thomas Gray died in Boone County, Iowa, on April 1, 1878; he rests with his wife in Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
