PVT Frederick Dohmeyer
1834 -1886
Co. H, 1st Illinois Light Artillery
CW
Anton Friedrich Dohmeyer was born May 8, 1834 in Bremen, Germany.
He entered the service of the Union army on February 27, 1864, as a Private in Company H, 1st Illinois Light Artillery. He mustered out on June 14, 1865, and is described in military records as an “artificier” -- a craftsman or inventor.
Dohmeyer married Sarah Creet after 1870; they had two children.
In 1872, the Joliet City Directory listed Frederick Dohmeyer as a resident saddler and harness maker.
Military sources cite the date of Private Frederick Dohmeyer’s death as November 6, 1886, but the location is undocumented. He is buried in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery, where his wife’s family resided; she is buried alongside him.
