Lyman L. Deill was born in Illinois on June 9, 1842, son of John E. and Alida (Vandewalker) Deill.
In 1840, his family relocated from New York to Lake Zurich where they farmed.
Deill mustered in the Union Army on October 1, 1862, assigned to Company E, 113th Illinois Infantry. He was discharged at St. Louis for a disability on January 4, 1863.
After the war, he was employed by the Chicago & Northwestern Railway as a Fireman in Chicago, later, as a locative Engineer for the Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul and Pacific Railroad in Oshkosh, Milwaukee and Madison.
Deill married Hattie R. Pratt in 1866 in Wisconsin; they had four children.
Private Lyman Deill’s death was recorded in Chicago as April 15, 1884; he is buried with his parents at Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
