Luther W. Davis was born August 15, 1837 (per family Bible) in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, to James and Parintha (Lawrence) Davis.

The family relocated to Illinois about 1840, settling in the Wauconda area as farmers.

Davis enlisted for 3 years of service in the Union army in Geneva on September 11, 1861, assigned to Company I, 52nd Illinois Infantry, where he served as a Private. The Illinois 52nd saw action at Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg and the Atlanta Campaign.

Professionally, Davis was a farmer, mechanic, and carpenter.

He married Adeline F. Bute on January 1, 1866 in Lake County; they had one child.

Private Luther W. Davis died at 35, on October 5, 1873, in Barrington; he is buried with his wife in Evergreen Cemetery.
