Horace Hamilton Church was born September 5, 1825, in Columbia County, New York, to Charles and Eliza (Kellogg) Church.

At age 37, Church enlisted as a Private, and served in Company E, 113th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. He received a disability discharge on September 30, 1863 at Mound City, Illinois.

He married Jane M. Humiston in Kendall County on October 15, 1864; they had two children.

Professionally, Church worked in farming, then as a railroad depot agent, and later, as a lumber and grain dealer.

Private Horace Church died June 8, 1886 in Chicago, and is buried with his wife at Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
