PVT Lewis H. Bute

Lewis H. Bute was born on December 23, 1820, in New York, to Lewis B. and Elizabeth (Smith) Bute.

The family migrated to Illinois in the early 1840’s.

Bute married Polly C. Applebee on March 12, 1845, in Barrington; they had three children. After her death, he married Emmaline Cornwell on December 2, 1879, in Barrington.

On October 4, 1864, Bute mustered in for Union army service as a Private with Company C, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery, and served until August 3, 1865. The company provided guards at Fort Donelson and Clarksville, Tennessee and engaged in some skirmishes.

He was among the early settlers of Cuba Township, and, served as Township Supervisor for many years, making his living as a farmer and attorney.

Private Lewis H. Bute died May 30, 1894, in Barrington; he is buried with first wife in Evergreen Cemetery.
