PVT Levi Whitney
1790 - 1855
CPT Asa Davis’ Bn, NY Militia
War of 1812
Levi Whitney was born July 12, 1790, in Oswego County, New York, to Benjamin and Ann Mercy (Harris) Whitney.
He married Permelia Chase on March 23, 1814, in Oswego County, NY; they had at least 4 children who survived childhood.
He served as a Private in the War of 1812 from October 7 to November 16, 1814 in Captain Asa Davis’ Battalion of the New York Militia.
Between 1840 and 1850, Levi and his wife, with at least four of the children migrated to Illinois, as some of the original settlers in Ela Township. His son, Joseph Whitney of Lake Zurich, told of the early days when folks awoke in the morning to find Indians peering through their windows. "Mother knew what they wanted. She baked a batch of johnny-cake (corn bread) for them and they went away happy."
Private Levi Whitney died October 8, 1855 in Lake Zurich; he is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
