Erastus I. Nelson was born in 1844 in New York, to Ebeneezer H. and Nancy (Brownell) Nelson.

The family emigrated to Illinois before 1860, and took up farming in Cuba Township.

Nelson enlisted in the Union army in October, 1864, with Company C, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery; he mustered out as a Private on August 3, 1865.

He married Josephine Phillips on March 13, 1878 in Barrington.

Tragically, Private Erastus Nelson died within the year, on February 20, 1879. He is buried with his wife and parents at Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
