George H. Meakins was born in Suffolk England about 1836, according to military records.
George H. “Makins” enlisted in Algonquin, where he was a farmer, on August 9, 1862, and mustered in to Company I, 95th Illinois Infantry. He served as a Private until he mustered out in Springfield on August 17, 1865.
He married Rose Cumerford on Christmas Eve, 1873 in Chicago.
George H. Meakins, 43, and his wife, Rose, a 42-year-old Irish immigrant, appear on the 1880 U.S. Federal census in Lake View, Cook County. He is a teamster, and there are no other members of the household listed.
Meakins was naturalized in 1887, where he indicated having been in the U.S. for 35 years, and confirmed his military service with a discharge certificate.
In September, 1888, George H. Makins, alias George H. Meakins, applied for his military pension for service in Company I, 95th Illinois Infantry.
Private George H. Meakins died before May 4, 1895, when Rose Meakins applied for a Widow’s Pension using his name and service unit. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
