Frederick D. Holmes was born in Oswego, New York about 1844 to Daniel and Albertine Holmes.

He gave his profession as “farmer” when h enlisted in the Union army in Morris on September 8, 1862, assigned to Company D, 91st Illinois Infantry.

Private Holmes was likely wounded in battle, for he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps (also known as the Invalid Corps) on November 15, 1864. This military organization within the Union Army gave light duty to partially disabled or former soldiers.

He mustered out on September 8, 1865, in Chicago.

Private Frederick Holmes’ post-war life is undocumented, but he died before his 29th birthday in 1874, and is buried with his parents in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
