Leonard Bell Koenen was born in Evanston on March 1, 1931, to Leonard and Helen Bell Koenen.

He spent his youth in Park Ridge where he graduated from Maine High School.  At 18, he signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians’ farm team and played for them for two years.

Koenen was drafted by the military and served his country honorably during the Korean War as a Corporal in the U.S. Army.

He married his first wife Carol Schiewe on October 8, 1951; they raised three children before her death in 1996. He married a second time in 2011, to Nancy Sibrava.

Upon his discharge, Koenen pursued a college education at Northwestern and stepped in to manage his family’s lumber company.  As a third-generation owner of Mayfair Lumber Company in Chicago, he led the company to new heights of success with integrity and character.

Koenen was a natural sportsman; in addition to his love of baseball, he also loved to fish, hunt, and play golf.

Corporal Leonard Koenen passed away peacefully on February 2, 2023, and is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
