Robert Bruce Hoffman was born August 13, 1924, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Max R. and Ruth (Naumer) Hoffman.

Hoffman was a World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre with the US Marine Corps as a Private First Class. After being discharged, Robert returned to the University of Illinois and graduated in 1947.
 
On June 27, 1952, he married Jane Phyllis Boyd in Winnetka; they raised two sons.

Hoffman joined the family business, HD Electric, after spending a year performing marionette shows in the children’s department at Marshall Field’s. At HD Electric, he worked his way up to the executive office, and eventually, to role of Chairman.

He loved to perform in local theater and to entertain his friends with impersonations of actors.

PFC Robert Hoffman died Feb 5, 2003, in Libertyville; he is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
