PVT Warren R. Ankele
1921 – 1944
USAR
WWII

Warren Robert Ankele was born in Lake Zurich on July 30, 1921, to William E. and Olga (Eichman) Ankele.

He was a baker’s assistant in Barrington when he enlisted on September 24, 1942, and assigned to the 119th Quartermaster Bakery Company as a Private.

The principal Quartermaster function in World War II was to supply items needed by all Army troops, most notably, food and clothing. But the Quartermaster Corps was more than a supply force; it provided many services, such as bath and laundry facilities, necessary to the health and comfort of the troops. The prompt collection and careful identification and burial of the dead and the respectful and suitable disposition of their possessions were essential services that contributed much to the morale of the front-line soldier.

Private Warren Ankele died suddenly of illness in New Guinea on June 4, 1944. He is buried with his parents in Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
