Edward William Ankele was born September 17, 1919, in Lake Zurich, to William E. and Olga Eichman Ankele.
Ankele married Lillian D. Foreman in 1939; they raised two children.
Before the war, Ankele was an auto mechanic. He enlisted for World War II U.S. Naval service on July 24, 1943, and served as a Motor Machinist’s Mate, First Class, aboard the USS Ogalala.
The Oglala was sunk in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, but was resurrected, restored, and reclassified as an internal combustion engine repair ship (ARG-1). She served at Milne Bay, New Guinea, and San Pedro Bay, Leyte, Philippine Islands.
Ankele was discharged in December, 1945. He made is career with Commonwealth Edison, where he was employed for 30 years, retiring as Supervisor of Transportation.
Motor Machinist’s Mate 1st class Edward Ankele died in Barrington, September 30, 1994; he is buried with his wife and parents at Evergreen Cemetery.
