Reuben Stevens was born about 1796 in New York.

In 1814, he enlisted as a soldier in the War of 1812 in Brooklyn, NY.

He married Phebe Hunt; they had at least four children.

Stevens farmed in Massachusetts and Oswego, New York, where he was pensioned for his service in 1857. About 1860, he and his wife co-located with his son, and he worked as a wheelwright. By the mid-1860’s this son was living in Cuba Township, Illinois, but Stevens was working as a wagon maker in Iowa.
