George Jay Miller was born in Lake County on April 10, 1892, to Charles and Mary Gossell Miller.

Miller served in WWI as a Private in a machine gun company of the 11th Infantry Regiment, which saw heavy fighting in the Vosges Mountains, Saint-Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne offensives.

He married Edith Magill on September 10, 1919; they raised three sons.

Miller and his brother ran a hardware and implement business in Barrington for 22 years. He was a community leader as a member of the public library board, the Methodist Church board, the Barrington Gun Club, Odd Fellows Lodge, and a charter member of American Legion Post 158. He also served as a member of the Barrington Volunteer Fire Department for 19 years.

Private George Miller died Aug 9, 1943 in Elgin; he is buried with his wife in Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery.
