PVT James Sizer

James Sizer was born in Soham, Cambridgeshire, England, on March 15, 1837, to John and Ann Sizer.  He emigrated in June, 1855, to escape service in the Crimean War, locating in the Lake Zurich area, where he made his living as a farmer.


Sizer enlisted in on September 6, 1861, and served for three years in Union Cavalry units, and was honorably discharged from Company G, 15th Cavalry Regiment on October 31, 1864. He participated in the Battle of Shiloh and siege of Corinth, sustaining injuries in a horse fall that would shorten his life.


Sizer married Arietta Hawley in 1866; they raised four children.  He lived the last twenty years of his life in Barrington, occupied as a teamster.


Private James Sizer died October 3, 1902, at his home in Barrington; he is buried by his wife in Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
