Enoch Colby VI was born in Candia, New Hampshire, on December 6, 1840 to Enoch and Eliza (Mitchell) Colby.


He moved to Barrington in 1854, and was known as a man well versed in current events and history, a fluent debater and theological liberal.


In 1861 he enlisted in Battery A, Illinois Light Artillery and mustered out July 10, 1865, after attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. The company was with Sherman on his march to the sea, and participated in the battles of Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, and the siege of Atlanta.


He married Amelia Hawley in April 1864. They made their home in Chicago, then Gardiner, Illinois, before returning to Barrington in 1901. He professional pursuits were as varied as his interests, including farmer, elevator foreman, grain merchant, and train inspector.


Lieutenant Enoch Colby IV suffered a heart attack and died while selecting a gravesite for a niece at Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington. He rests there with his wife and niece forever.
