George Washington Johnson was born February 27, 1828, in Lorraine, New York.


He came to Lake County in 1844, and settled in Cuba Township, where he farmed for nearly 50 years.


In October, 1864, Johnson mustered in as a Private in Company C, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery. The Company performed garrison duty at Fort Donelson and Clarksville, Tennessee. He was discharged in Springfield on August 3, 1865.


Johnson was married to Lestina L. Tracy on November 28, 1860, in Sharon, Wisconsin; three children were born to them before her untimely death in 1866. On March 25, 1870, he married Mrs. Maria Felton French.


Private George W. Johnson died April 24, 1910, at his Barrington home after a long illness; he is buried with his wife at Evergreen Cemetery.
