PVT Cornelius D. Dunn

Cornelius D. Dunn was born on July 13, 1828, in Yeovil, England.
He learned the shoemaker’s trade and was married at an early age to Margaret McKenzie in Edinburgh, Scotland; they had seven daughters.
The couple emigrated about 1857 with their first two daughters and settled in Barrington, where Dunn was a shoe and book maker for more than 30 years. After his retirement, he lived in St. Petersburg, Florida with his oldest daughter.
On October 1, 1864, Dunn was mustered into Company C, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery, and served until August 3, 1865. The Company performed garrison duty at Fort Donelson and Clarksville, Tennessee at the end of the Civil War.
Private Cornelius Dunn died January 19, 1911, at a daughter’s home in Blue Island, where he was visiting. He is buried with his wife in Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
