PVT Leopolt R. Krahn

Leopolt R. Krahn was born December 28, 1841, in Schenkenberg, Germany.

 

He emigrated to the U.S. in 1852 with his widowed mother.

 

In 1861, Krahn enlisted with the 13th Illinois Cavalry, and the unit was engaged in raids and skirmishes in Missouri and Arkansas; he was honorably discharged when kicked by a mule he was shoeing.

 

On February 28, 1867, Krahn married Mary Meiners in Barrington; they raised six children.

 

The family lived in Lake County near Waukegan for many years, where Krahn was a blacksmith and painter, later relocating to Barrington where he was a decorator by trade.

 

Private Leopolt R. Krahn died May 15, 1915; he is buried with his wife at Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
