William Humphrey was born March 12, 1839, in Yorkshire, England, to John and Anna (Nightingale) Humphrey.

He emigrated to the United States in 1861, and was naturalized October 30, 1880, based on his Civil War service.

He served in Company K, 88th Illinois Infantry Regiment from August 27, 1862 to June 9, 1865, participating in battles in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia.

After the war, he returned to farming near Barrington and married Elizabeth Wayman; they had 6 children. Following her death, he married widow Abbie Gutzler Mengel on July 18, 1900; they raised two daughters.

Corporal William Humphrey died October 14, 1922, and is buried with both his wives in Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
