LT Urial Burlingham
1816 - 1894
Co. E, 113 Illinois Infantry
CW
Urial Burlingham was born about 1816 in Washington County, New York, to Samuel and Eunice (Hoyt) Burlingham.
He came west in 1835, and was employed at LaSalle and Pontiac during the building of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. He returned east in 1839 where he married Lois Burnham on September 30, 1841, in Saratoga County, New York.
Burlingham was an accomplished carpenter and builder; he built several of the depots along what is now the Milwaukee Division of the C & NW Railway. After moving his family to Barrington in 1859, he erected the Baptist church, the Methodist Episcopal church, and several mercantile buildings and residences that still stand today.
In August, 1862, Burlingham enlisted in Company E of the 113th Illinois Infantry, and was appointed First Lieutenant. The company participated in campaigns in western Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The winter of 1862-3 was noted for the continuous rains in the Mississippi Valley, which resulted in the illness from which Lt. Burlingham never fully recovered.
Lieutenant Urial Burlingham died Dec 20, 1894, at his home in Barrington. He is buried with his wife in Evergreen Cemetery.
