Isaac W. Seaverns was born on September 13, 1840 in Cleveland, Ohio to Isaac and Abbie (Winslow) Seaverns.

Seaverns began his railroad career at the age of 18 as a fireman between Cleveland, OH and Erie, PA.

At the outset of the Civil War in 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company E of the 1st Ohio Infantry, and served four months. He later re-enlisted in Company D, 84th Ohio Infantry, and mustered out as a Corporal.

He married Julia Pinkney on May 28, 1863 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio; they raised one son and two daughters.

He joined the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad as a fireman, and was promoted to engineer in less than a year, moving on to the Northwestern Railroad in 1865. He remained in active service on the Wisconsin and Milwaukee division until October 1, 1906, a record of 41 years of continuous service for the Northwestern. In these 41 years, he drove his locomotive 1.365 M miles without death or injury to anyone who rode with or behind him.

He was a longtime member of both the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Grand Army of the Republic.

After Seaverns retired, he and his wife made their home with their daughter in Randolph, Nebraska, where Cpl. Isaac Seaverns passed away August 1, 1918. He is buried with his wife at Evergreen Cemetery.
