WWI & WWII & Korea

Carl G. Olson, IV was born January 9, 1896, in Bradford, Pennsylvania to Carl and Hanna (Langborg) Olson.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1917 as an apprentice seaman, and became one of the few aviators from WWI qualified to fly in WWII. As the senior member of the Naval Aviation Cadet Selection Board in Chicago, Olsen was among the most publicly visible US Navy spokesperson in Chicago during WWII.

After WWI, Olson attended and graduated from Lawrence College in Appleton, WI where he played football, then coached high school sports for two years at Stephens Point, Wisconsin. He was afterward employed in corporate engineering and promotional work in Chicago and Detroit.

Olson married Ohio aviatrix Louise G. Vamos on July 22 1932; they raised a daughter and son.

Following WWII, Olson immersed himself in placing naval airmen in civilian jobs. In 1947, he was named as Business Manager of the Chicago Rockets, a short-lived All-American Football Conference team. He continued in the USN Reserve, however, serving a total of 39 years before retiring in 1956 as a Captain.

Captain Olson passed away September 5, 1986, at the VA Hospital in North Chicago. He is buried with his wife at Evergreen Cemetery.
