Charles Paine

Charles Paine was born in Lake County, Illinois in August, 1842, to Seth and Frances (Whitlock) Paine.

He was working for the Chicago Tribune when he enlisted as a Private in the 12th Illinois Volunteers at the onset of the Civil War.  Private Paine was soon commissioned as a Sergeant.

Under the command of General Grant, he participated in the bloody battles of Donelson and Shiloh, where he was severely wounded in April, 1862. He never fully recovered from his wounds which led to his disability discharge September 4, 1862.

Sgt. Paine married Phimelia Winter on October 26, 1863 in Chicago.

At the time of his death, he was a clerk in the Ordnance Bureau of the War Department in Washington, DC. Sgt. Paine died at his residence there on September 24, 1865, leaving a 23-year-old widow, pregnant with his daughter. His body was returned to Chicago and interred at Evergreen Cemetery.
